Air Compressor Buying GuideAir compressors are available in the market in wide variety of models and choosing the right one for your specific job can seem to be confusing. Air compressor can be used for different type of projects that are ranging from light home improvement to heavy-duty industrial building.

Air compressor is one of the most powerful tools that makes your work easier. Air compressors are mainly used for to run several tools at a time due to their ability. The affordability of air-powered tools and the ease of use an air-powered tool provide its user. When you are going to select a new air compressor, then you have to consider many factors such as power source, affordability and what its intended use will be.

Identify the Uses of Your Air Compressor

There are various varieties of models and different makers are available for air compressors. From that you can choose your required type air compressor. To make sure that you choose the best air compressor and it is most suited to your needs, there are many factors to consider that will influence your purchase. The first thing you should do is to decide what exactly you intend to use the compressor for.

First of all, decide what tools you wish to operate, whether it will be indoors or outdoors, whether portability is high on your agenda, and how many tools need to be operated simultaneously. For the industrial premises or garages, you will need a compressor with a bigger air capacity to be able to meet all the requirements. But, a home user is probably only going to be using one air tool at a time.

Gas or Electric

This is the primary decision to be made in the first itself. Whether you want a gas/petrol powered air compressor, or if one powered by an electric motor. Electric motor would be more suited to your requirement. Both types have their advantages and also their disadvantages.

Which Type of Air Compressor?

An air Compressor is one of the major energy consuming utilities in any industrial operation. And they are main classified into two, they are

  1. Positive Displacement Type
  2. Dynamic Type

Positive Displacement Air Compressor

Positive displacement air compressors are those, who mechanically displace a fixed volume of air into a reduced volume. The constant volume can be delivered by compressor when operated at fixed speed. The discharge pressure is determined by the system load conditions. If the consumption of air is more, then discharge pressure falls below the cut-off pressure & compressor works on load condition.

Dynamic Type Air Compressor

The Dynamic Type Air Compressors mechanically impart velocity to the air. This action is produced by the Impellers rotating at a high speed, in enclosed casing. The air is forced into a progressively reduced volume. The volumetric flow will vary inversely with the differential pressure across the compressor.

This type of compressor is further classified as

  • Centrifugal Air Compressor.

In a Centrifugal Air Compressor, an Impeller is mounted on a shaft and positioned within housing, consisting of an inlet duct, a volute and a Diffuser. The velocity to the air can be imparted by the high speed rotation of Impeller. The Diffuser surrounds the Impeller and act to convert the Kinetic energy of air into potential energy at a higher pressure level.

  • Axial Flow Air Compressor.

The Axial Flow Type Air Compressor is essentially a large capacity, high speed machine with characteristics quite different from the centrifugal air compressor. Each stage consist of two rows of blades, one row rotating & the next row of blade is stationery. The rotor blades impart velocity and pressure to the air as the motor turns, the velocity being converted to pressure in stationery blades.

  • Roots Blower Compressor.

This type is generally called as blower. The discharge air pressure obtained from this type of machine is very low. The Discharge Pressure of 1 bar can be obtained in Single Stage and pressure of 2. 2 bar is obtained from Double Stage. The discharged pressure achieved by two rotors which have separate parallel axis and rotate in opposite directions. This is the example of Positive Displacement Compressor in Rotary Type Air Compressor.

Safety First

Look for safety features. Compare compressors made by different manufacturers for available safety options. Some compressors come with emergency shut-off switches, thick power cords that cannot be easily cut or frayed, power surge protection, color coded switches and operating buttons, warning indicators for overloaded equipment and a stable frame to prevent tipping. Choose a compressor that has standard safety features as well as any advanced features that will limit accidents.

Cost of Air Compressor

Once you have determined the style and size of compressor you need, analyze the pricing of various manufacturers and retailers. Some manufacturers will also offer a trade discount to licensed builders and contractors. Online research can help to quickly compare air compressor features, specifications and pricing side by side. Speak with retailers directly to inquire about upcoming sales and promotions. Purchase a compressor that fulfills your needs and is within your budget.

Oil-Lubricated or Oil-Free

Air compressors can be quite complex tools, and need a bit of maintenance TLC to keep in tip top working order. Some require more maintenance than others however, specifically the ones that are oil lubricated. These tend to be the more advanced models, as oil lubrication can reduce the volume of the unit significantly, meaning they are usually a lot quieter indoors. One of the other major benefits attested to oil filled compressors is that they are a lot more durable and long-lasting.

As with a car, the oil helps to keep everything running smoothly and stops the pistons and moving parts from wearing away.

Finally

Now, you are now a eligible person to buy an air compressor according to your uses. If you read the full article, then you can believe in yourself that you can buy the perfect air compressor. So, don’t me cheated or spend more money on buying the new air compressor.
